What natural resources helped build Bisbee into a thriving city? How were those resources managed? What happened to Bisbee — and what does its future hold? Explore a “company town” off the beaten path in southeastern Arizona. Enjoy “geology-on-the-bus,” visit a copper mine, and learn how copper prices are integrally linked to Arizona’s economy.

Learning Outcomes and Indicators
By participating in this study tour, learners will:

  • Understand the role of natural resources in the economic development of an area by citing historical events that led to the “boom and bust” of Bisbee.
  • Investigate the role of copper mining in Arizona by analyzing historical and contemporary documents.
  • Recognize the importance of earth science education by identifying various aspects of our lives directly affected by geology and earth science.
  • Explore diverse career opportunities in the mining industry by participating in cooperative learning activities.
